The Aerotib line from the Calvià area to the airport in the low season, the first improvement of the TIB bus network with the modification of the concessions

The line from Peguera to the airport will enter service on Friday 20 December.

The modification of the concessions will allow for more lines and the incorporation of 27 more buses.

The modification of the concession contracts for the intercity bus service of the TIB network will enable a significant improvement in the service as of December, when one of the new improvements will be applied: the implementation of one of the Aerotib lines to connect several residential areas in the Calvià area with the airport during the low season.

The Minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, and the Managing Director of Mobility, Lorena del Valle, have reported this Monday on the modification of the concessions of the intercity bus service in Majorca and the first measures for improvement that will be implemented in the near future. Overall, the modification of the bus concessions for the 2024-2030 period will enable an extension in timetables and lines and also an expansion of the fleet with the addition of 27 buses (to a total of 257 buses).

The first improvement that can already be implemented is the launch of the Aerotib service during the winter: the A11 line will connect the Calvià area with the airport from next Friday 20 December. This line, which has stops in Peguera, Santa Ponça, Magaluf, Palmanova and Portals Nous, among others, will run at an average frequency of one hour, with the first departure at 4.50 am from Peguera and the last at 11.10 pm from the airport.

The other Aerotib lines will also connect the main residential areas with Son Sant Joan in the low season and are expected to start service from February 2025, taking into account the different timetable for processing the modification of the three inter-city bus service concessions of the TIB network.

With the modification of the concessions, the Government of the Balearic Islands is committed to improving public transport and adapting the TIB network service to real demand, taking into account the increase in users in recent years and the fact that, in three years, demand has risen above the initial forecasts of the current concessions, in force since January 2021. The modification of the contracts involves an increase in the total budget of the concessions of around €150 million (from €436 to €580 million) until 2030 and will enable a number of improvements to be introduced progressively.
This contract modification is key to respond to the current increase in demand, with the service offer increasing from the 16.5 million kilometres included in the contracts initiated in 2021 to the 24.6 million kilometres per year of the modification. This is a growth of about 50% of the initially planned service. Last year, a service of 22.1 million kilometres was offered, with an increase in frequencies and the addition of 10 new buses. The contract amendments also provide for the addition of 27 buses.
